Music Quiz

The Clubhouse is packed to capacity with eager members, all competing in the music quiz I'm running for the first time. Self funded, the Club relies on events to encourage members to part with money extra to their membership fees. Last year another committee member ran a successful general knowledge quiz which made almost £500 profit. Thought I'd contribute with a music quiz.

Been preparing on and off since November, creating questions and clips of music. Six rounds, each with team questions based on ten clips of music. Each round has a theme. For the first, teams have to guess the colour in the music titles. Last round is all about Eurovision Song Contest songs.

To add a bit of buzz, after each team answer is given I pose a first hand up, no-consulting, individual question. Get it right and it's an extra point for the team. Get it wrong and it's a minus point. A chance to be hero or zero. Bit of a problem spotting the first hand up amongst more than fifty attendees. Once or twice there's a claim I've selected the wrong person.

There's a cartoon fish scoreboard as shown above, so each team can track their progress. The winners are awarded a huge cartoon gold cup.  Brought my afro-hair wig, but decided against wearing it. Bit too much for some of our more conservative-minded members.

Start at 7.30pm, break after three rounds for jacket potatoes, butter, beans and more alcohol. Finished by 10.30pm. One team has a particularly good participant and wins comfortably.

Good fun. Lots of appreciative comments. Already thinking about how to improve things for next year. Maybe drop the individual questions. Less pop songs. Include tunes played backwards, national anthems. Maybe a bidding war between each round for teams to guess a tune in the least possible notes, having given them an idea of the type of music.

As I head off into the dark of a cold January night to walk the mile home, very happy about how it all went.
